The final episode of the wildly popular Disney Channel show aired over 15 years ago, but a reboot is currently in the works. However, Duff has revealed that she was against taking part in a reboot.
In an exclusive interview with Cosmopolitan, Hilary Duff shared that she was asked to do a reboot numerous times after the show ended, but she would always refuse. “They asked me for years and years: ‘Let’s do a reboot, let’s do a reboot,’ and I was like, ‘No, no, no,’”
Duff revealed to the interviewer that, in spite of the show's enormous success, it was actually difficult for her to get acting roles after Disney’s Lizzie McGuire.
She explained that she couldn’t escape the title character that lifted her to fame. “I definitely went through big frustrations of being like, ‘Why can I not get a shot at being someone else?"
"Not that I want to dog every casting director out there," she continued, "but there’s a very small handful of people who are character actors and can be hired for roles that are truly different from one another. From age 21 to 25, before I became a mom, there was a lot of frustration.”
The actress added that the acquired fame from Disney overshadowed her talent. “I would get to producer callback and they’d be like, ‘She’s so great and she gave us the best reading and blah blah blah, but she’s Hilary Duff…’”
After getting the role of Kelsey Peters on TV Land's Younger, Duff was finally able to get past her frustrations from her long stint in the Disney Channel role.
“I’m at such a different place in my life now, being a mother and a wife – it doesn’t weigh on me anymore,” she said. “I don’t feel like people only see me that way, but [even] when they do, I feel appreciative of it because [Lizzie McGuire] was very impactful on so many people’s lives.”
The Lizzie McGuire reboot will follow an adult Lizzie in her 30s. Duff hopes the show will be relatable to women in her age group, just like Lizzie was for teens back when it started.
“I think it’s the right time to set back in and have her go along with you, in your 30s and all the fun times, and all of the big monumental moments, and all of the challenges that you’re faced with,” said Duff. “I just thought that there was an opportunity there for her to be grown up and for her to be there for women again.”
The reboot was set to be released on Disney Plus but the production was halted because it no longer had an image suitable for the streaming platform. Back in February, Duff took to Instagramexpress her frustration and urged Hulu to take on Lizzie McGuire reboot.
So far, there hasn’t been an official announcement on when the show will resume production - but the fan enthusiasm is there, so it's probably only a matter of time.
